Mary of Egypt, whom we always commemorate on the fifth Sunday of the Great Fast, provides an example of a unique and exceptional vocation within the Body of Christ! Christians normally discern (prayerfully listen to God’s Will) either marriage or celibacy within a church structure like a monastery or the priesthood. There are also many who are patiently listening for Our Lord’s promptings, and working towards one or the other of these helps towards holiness. Mary of Egypt, called directly by the Mother of God to a life of solitary prayer and penance, along with saints like the stylites, fools for Christ etc. found a path to holiness in celibacy that was blessed by God and His Church, but did not fit into the ordinary structure that most Christians are called to. May they intercede for those who are living unique and exceptional vocations.
(Before actively discerning a vocation like this, it is very necessary to have the blessing and guidance of a spiritual director)
“For the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Our Savior walked with his disciples and shared that his ministry’s height would come through a descent, becoming the servant of all in the baptism of his Cross. Are you open to giving your life as a servant of all as a priest, deacon, monk or nun? Contact the Vocations Office at 206-329-9219 or email: vocations@ephx.org
