St. John of Damascus (c. 675-749) was a theologian and hymnographer. He was one of the great defenders of the holy icons against the iconoclasts. The following are excerpts from his first treatise “against those who attack the holy images: “Of old, God the incorporeal and formless was never depicted, but now that God has been seen in the flesh and has associated with human kind, I depict what I have seen of God. I do not venerate matter, I venerate the fashioner of matter, who became matter for my sake and accepted to dwell in matter and through matter worked my salvation… Do not abuse matter; for it is not dishonorable, this is the view of the Manichees. The only thing that is dishonorable is something that does not have its origin from God.” (Treatise 1.16)

There are also ebook and audio (free on the Athonite Audio podcast from March 27, 2024) versions online.

This year’s Bishop’s Appeal runs through May 2026.
The community goal for St. Mary’s is $24,500.
We’ve donated $1,558.60 to this goal. Thank you!
You should have received a letter from Bishop Artur with a greeting, donation allocation and payment information. You can also give to the appeal by going to the “Donation” page at www.ephx.org. Please make sure you identify the parish or the mission as the recipient of your generosity.
Thank you to the following parishioners who have given this year: Alig, O’Loughlin, Reichert, Zimmerman

“We have found the one about whom Moses wrote in the law and also the prophets.” Finding our Savior during this Great Lent, we see that our “soiled image was restored to its original form, commingled with divine beauty.” God may be helping you find that a vocation to monasticism or holy orders is the beauty meant for you.
