Many Byzantine Catholics only associate the Prayer of St. Ephrem with the Great Fast (Lent). This beautiful and penitential prayer, though, is prescribed to be prayed during days of Alleluia (days during a fasting period that are not trumped by a feast) during all four annual fasts. We are in the midst of the Dormition fast until next Sunday. Because of the Post-feast of the Transfiguration, there are no more days of Alleluia until the Dormition, so we won’t be praying this prayer publicly, but you can always pray it privately during all of these fasting periods, or in a personal season of repentance.
Lord and Master of my life,
Spare me from the spirit of indifference, despair,
lust for power and idle chatter. (Prostration)
Instead, bestow on me Your servant,
The spirit of integrity, humility, patience and love. (Prostration)
Yes, O Lord and King, let me see my own sins
And not judge my brothers and sisters,
For You are Blessed, forever and ever. Amen. (Prostration)
“The lord of that slave, moved with compassion, released him, and forgave him the debt.” In today’s parable, we see our Lord acting out of compassion. Just as his transfiguration shows a glory beyond this world, compassion transcends what we deserve and brings forgiveness in the midst of debt. Is a life of prayer and compassion through the religious or ordained life something that God is calling you to consider? Contact the Vocations Office at 206-329-9219 or email: vocations@ephx.org
