Deacon Doors

Along with the Royal Doors that occupy the center of the Iconostasis, and are used exclusively by bishops and priests (when they represent Christ the High Priest), every temple icon screen has two other doors that occupy the space between the central icons and those on the periphery. These doors are called the Deacon Doors. They allow access to the altar area by the deacons and servers. These doors usually contain icons of deacon-saints like Stephen and Lawrence, or angels (whom the deacons represent in the Divine Liturgy). These doors remain closed except when they are being used or during Bright Week when all the doors are left open revealing Christ’s access-gifting Resurrection.

God With Us Presents Lifting the Veil

God With Us is hosting a live webinar series on the mystical understanding of the Divine Liturgy beginning Wednesday, January 11 through the 25th at 5pm PT. “The Divine Liturgy makes present the events of salvation history and allows us to participate in the worship of God along with the whole cosmos. In this series, guided by Scripture and saints such as Maximos the Confessor and Symeon of Thessaloniki, we will explore the Church’s mystical interpretation of the Divine Liturgy and how it draws us to participate in the entirety of salvation.”
